Screen Capture

One click in the menu bar records your screen with the sound your Mac is playing. Straight to the Desktop.

Screen Capture records your screen the way an iPhone does. Click the icon in the menu bar and it starts recording the display your pointer is on, with whatever your Mac is playing. Click it again and the MP4 is on your Desktop.

The sound is the part QuickTime and Command-Shift-5 leave out: they record the screen silent unless you install a loopback driver. Screen Capture takes the system audio straight off the mix, with no driver and no setup. Turn the microphone on and your voice goes on its own track, so it can be muted or mixed later.

It records at your screen's full Retina resolution at 60 fps by default, so text stays sharp and motion stays smooth. 1080p and 30 fps are in the menu for smaller files.

The icon is a white ring and dot that turns red while it's recording. Option-S starts and stops it from anywhere. A crash, a force quit or a dead battery keeps everything up to the last second, and the recording is handed back the next time it opens.

Free, and it uninstalls itself from the same menu.

Requirements

macOS 13 Ventura or later. Universal binary: Apple Silicon and Intel. Signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens with a double-click. Needs Screen Recording permission (System Settings → Privacy & Security); quit and reopen it after switching that on. Asks for the microphone only if you turn the mic on.
